Acid Reflux: Can it be cured?
Acid reflux or GERD is a major health issue. It can affect both women and mens health. It is regurgitation of stomach content high in acid into the esophagus. Reflux is prevented by the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) which remains tightly closed and opens when peristaltic waves herald the imminent arrival of swallowed food. When the lower esophageal sphincter becomes faulty acid reflux will result. This is called GERD or gastro-esophageal reflux disease.
Is it possible to cure your acid reflux? If there is true lower esophageal incompetence, then there is no cure. You will need maintenance treatment with acid suppressants like omeprazole, or if very severe or you develop secondary problems then surgical treatment such as fundoplication will relieve your symptoms.
However, the effeciency of the LES can be affected by several factors. Eliminating these factors may avoid a trip to your doctor or taking over the counter medication. Sometimes all you need is a change of lifestyle.
A contributory cause of acid reflux is obesity. It is more likely in the apple type distribution of weight. The extra weight increases bulk in the upper abdomen and makes it difficult for the esophagus to discharge food effectively into the stomach. In addition hiatus hernia is more common in obese individuals. The LES can be weakened by a hiatus hernia. An important aspect of GERD treatment is losing weight.
Acid reflux can be caused by wearing tight fitting clothes especially if it is two sizes too small. The pressure exerted on the stomach may trigger back flow into the esophagus. Wear loose clothes and your reflux symptoms may go away.
Large volume of food in the stomach will put pressure on the LES and can trigger acid reflux. It has happened to us all at some time or other. Gastric clearance time is also increased by large volume increasing the risk for reflux. Eating smaller portions more frequently will counter this problem.
GERD can be affected by certain foods. Cow’s milk protein intolerance can cause esophagitis. It is called Allergic Eosinophilic Esophagitis. This is controlled by removing cow’s milk protein from the diet. Other foods such as fats, coffee, alcohol, tea and some spices can affect the lower esophageal sphincter.
Some drugs can affect the LES and cause acid reflux. Broncho-dilators such as theophylline, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID), tri-cyclic antidepressants ie amitryptilline and drugs for Parkinson’s disease are in this list.
Female hormones can affect acid reflux. Women on hormones, in a Scandinavian Study had increased risk of GERD. These drugs include the contraceptive pill and hormone replacement therapy (HRT). The peristaltic waves in the esophagus can be slowed down by sedatives and tranquillisers and can affect proper discharge of food from the esophagus.
If you are on medication and you have GERD, opt for liquid medication. Certain drugs ie tetracycline are corrosive to the esophageal lining. Tablets and capsules (gelcaps) can lodge in the esophagus. Make it a habit to drink a glass of water to wash the medication down. Try not to take medication while lying down. It is best for GERD patients to take drugs standing or sitting up and avoid lying down immediately after.
Smoking relaxes the LES and nicotine is corrosive to esophageal lining. GERD symptoms improve when you give up smoking.
Certain exercises have been shown to increase the risk of GERD. This is the case in competitive weightlifting and cycling. GERD symptoms can develop in joggers.
If by eliminating all the risk factors, your symptoms disappear, then you have actually cured your acid reflux. However, if the symptoms persist, the next step is a visit to your doctor.
The Advantages of Stretching Daily
Your fitness goals will be much easier to achieve if you stretch daily. A workout like this one is great for re-establishing or improving suppleness, according to many fitness specialists. Stretching will protect your body from becoming injured during your workout, and also during your regular activities. Many other advantages can come from daily stretching as well. Following are several of the principal benefits of stretching.
Increasing your range of motion and improving mobility are the major advantages of performing muscle stretching exercises. You’ll be able to maintain and then boost your flexibility by maintaining a regular stretching routine. You become more agile and experience less difficulty with moving around when you tone your muscles in this manner. You can also improve your strength in a specific area of your body by doing targeted stretches. It won’t even take very long, if you’re diligent about doing your exercises. These rewards will in turn make your regular workouts more productive.
You’ll even be able to forestall everyday injuries if you are stretching regularly. Your likelihood of pulling a muscle are much lower if you have good flexibility. It works because your muscles will have learned to move in new ways. Plus you will feel less pain in your joints if you make a stretching program a routine part of your day.
Your circulatory system is improved when you stretch your muscles on a regular basis. The reason is that it increases the blood supply throughout your body. This gives your body the building blocks to perform the best it can.
Stretching can improve not only your physical performance but your mental functioning as well. Your mood will be uplifted and your blood flow will be better with regular stretching. Both your ability to make logical decisions and your capacity to think and learn will be enhanced due to the additional amount of oxygen in the blood flowing to your brain.
However stretching regimens only prove effective when the stretches are conducted properly. You have to pay attention to the proper form and do not stretch your muscles beyond their capacity in order to derive the most benefits from your routine.
You’ll notice that you have more self-assurance and feel healthier when you stretch daily. This is the case regardless of the goal of your stretching, be it for muscle toning or strength training. Daily stretching is ideal, but you ought to do it at least three times a week for the best results.
The Most Fascinating Thing Just Launched, Is Airbrush Tanning
The popularity of airbrush tanning continues to grow today and a major reason for this burgeoning popularity is that people are now realizing that sunbathing can be more dangerous than was previously believed to be the case. In fact, with depletion of the ozone layer the risks associated with sunbathing have increased and so it has become a less appealing option as compared to beds tanning and airbrush tanning. By choosing to go for normal sunbathing sessions you risk developing skin cancer and lesser side effects including wrinkling of the skin and other minor skin blemishes.
Airbrush Tanning A Viable Alternative
To many, the introduction of the tanning bed seemed to present a viable alternative to sunbathing but this option required spending long hours on the bed and chances of developing cancer were still high. Much faster than the case with someone that tries to develop a tan through sunbathing, in this case your skin could turn leathery and the skin might also wrinkle up much faster.
Airbrush tanningis the new kid on the block and it requires that you use a solution that contains dihydroxyacetone or what is called DHA which is safe to use as long as it does not get into either the mouth or your eyes. Furthermore, airbrush tanning can be done by hand and in a booth. When you choose to get airbrush tanning done in a booth you will need to stand while the solution is sprayed on your body while if you choose to get airbrush tanning done by hand you will need to apply the solution with the help of tools that a technician uses and which is applied by hand.
You can also buy airbrush tanning kits that are readily available and which are often used in salons as well as by most home users. If you choose to buy a D-I-Y airbrush tanning kit you can, for the two hundred dollar cost, obtain less than professional looking results but which are still very adequate and so well worth trying out; especially, if you cannot afford the cost of going to a salon to get your airbrush tanning done professionally.
Without a doubt, using the right kind of airbrush tanning equipment offers you the best chance to get maximum advantage in regard to developing an ideal tan. All you will need to do, in case you plan on doing your airbrush tanning by yourself, is learn how to use the airbrush gun which is of course very easy to use in any case.
Do Health Supplements Help People Garner Lifelong Health?
Staying healthy is a big topic in the world today. You can tell by all the health-related magazines, TV and radio programs and Web sites everywhere you turn. Health information has become more common because it’s hard to stay healthy in our modern world and people are asking for all the help they can get. That’s probably because as a society our diets aren’t as naturally rich with vitamins and minerals as they used to be. Consuming calories from junk food that taste good but offer no nutrition has resulted in a generally lower standard of health. We’re also not as connected to what is healthy for our bodies, because along with eating junk food, the trend in recent years has been to move away from physical activity in our jobs. That combination has caused people to look for other methods to stay healthy.
On the surface, people feel much more attractive if they’re healthy. But as you delve deeper, you’ll discover there are plenty of other reasons to stay in great condition. For example, people who focus on their health enjoy life more and stay vibrant and illness-free so much longer. Good health allows them to achieve a quality of life they wouldn’t otherwise have. Those are some pretty good reasons to work on your health. If you need even more incentive, though, consider your friends and family. I’ll bet they’d all say they want you to be healthy and fit so you can stick around for as long as possible!
One of the ways that people count on to stay healthy is the consumption of supplements and vitamins. But do nutrition supplements really work? That’s something everyone has to answer for themselves but there have been quite a few studies that suggest there is great value in nutritional supplements. One good example of this are the studies spurred by the experience of World War II English Royal Air Force pilots whose night vision improved when they ingested bilberry. Researchers reviewed the role of bilberry extracts on general eye health and established a reliable connection. In point of fact, some recent studies have indicated that bilberries or bilberry supplements can increase visual acuity in people who are healthy, and can also help people who have eye diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), cataracts and glaucoma. Other substances also have been proved to have a positive impact on vision eye care, such as lutein and vitamin A. And these are only a few eye-related examples. The Internet is full of documentation that details research studies on every possible substance. Naturally, I can’t say whether all of them have received as positive research findings as bilberry. It’s important to check for yourself, and make sure you get the latest research results. Remember, supplements carry risks just like medicines, so don’t take them lightly. But don’t let that stop you either. Just make sure you understand what you’re doing and then follow your instincts.
When You Get H1N1 Symptoms, Here Are A Few Things You Can Do
Even though there’s no cure for flu, you can reduce H1N1 symptoms by using common sense and taking care of yourself during the illness. Here are a few tips:
- See your doctor within 48 hours of noticing H1N1 symptoms and ask about antiviral drugs. Antiviral drugs help reduce H1N1 symptoms and may shorten the life of the flu if taken early enough.
- Get plenty of rest. Your body needs the additional rest to fight the infection.
- Drink plenty of liquids. Staying hydrated is important when you have a fever, and you may need more fluids to accomplish this.
- Breathe steam. Use a humidifier or a bowl of steaming water to increase moisture to dry throats and nasal passages.
- Seek medical advice. If your flu symptoms worsen or if you have a chronic medical condition such as heart disease, diabetes, COPD, asthma, or AIDS/HIV, call your doctor. Your doctor can check your symptoms to see if you might need additional medication or other treatment.
- Remember, antibiotics won’t work for the H1N1 virus. In fact, they may lead to antibiotic resistance if you take them incorrectly.
- Eat a nutritious diet and take supplements to maximize your immune system’s defenses against the flu.
- Get plenty of sleep — 7 to 9 hours at least.
- Don’t infect others. Stay away from family and friends, because you are still contagious for five days after H1N1 symptoms start.

There is really no cure for any viral diseases; however some antiviral medications that your doctor may have can provide some relief. It’s best, however, to make sure your immune system is strong enough to fight off a viral infection before you get sick in the first place.
The most common swine flu symptoms are:

Flu Treatment At Home – Saline Solution
I’ve said before that once you get the flu, there is no cure. But there are some effective ways to reduce your flu symptoms or even shorten the time you are sick. One very easy flu treatment at home is to use a saline solution.
The great thing about using a saline solution is that it’s not only good for cold and flu symptoms, but it works very well for allergies, as well. I have used a saline solution for my allergies for years and it only takes a couple of days to begin getting results.
You can find saline solutions at your local pharmacy or even your local supermarket, but it is easy to make up a simple solution at home. Here’s the recipe for your flu treatment at home arsenal:
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon baking soda
- 8 ounces of warm water
- Mix the solution and squirt into each nostril with a bulb syringe. (You might want to be leaning over the sink for this!
) - Let the solution drain.
- Repeat 2 to 3 times.
- Do the same for each nostril.
I know, this doesn’t sound fun or even the least bit comfortable, but it works.
This should not be used, however, as a replacement for professional care. If you get the flu, see a doctor. I still feel that the best flu treatment at home is to not get sick in the first place. This can only be done by beefing up your immune system while you are still healthy. Using a saline solution while you are well will help to keep germs from entering your system, but it is only one method. Make sure your system gets the right proteins and supplements it needs to fight the flu before you get sick.
Flu Treatment Options
There is no cure for the flu virus, natural or otherwise. But there are flu treatment options.
Actually, those flu symptoms are a part of a natural process showing you that your immune system is at work. Our body tries to kill the virus by raising our temperature. The fever also helps to circulate proteins through your bloodstream to kill of germs. The fever is actually helping you get well.
It also helps to cough. Mucus that carries germs to your lungs and other parts of your body is cleared by coughing.
Something as simple as drinking water can help clear nasal and chest congestion. Any time you have respiratory problems, hydrating is an easy and healthy solution. When mucus is diluted, it’s easier to expel. Water also helps sinuses drain better and the membrane is less vulnerable to infection.
You can also remove virus germs from the nasal passages by rinsing with salt water (saline solutions). Saline solutions are available over the counter or you can find a recipe on the internet.
Unfortunately, if you have the flu, there is no cure. The smart solution is to beef up your immune system while you are healthy. The is amoung the best of the flu treatment options. If you do get sick, a strong immune system will reduce your symptoms and shorten the time you have the flu.
